12/15/2023 0 Comments Aliens title sequenceThis is shown when Mickey and Mallory start dancing after they’ve killed some of the characters in the diner. At the end of the opening sequence we see some classic romance. I think the adventure element comes from Mickey and Mallory’s view because it’s like they enjoy killing people, they plan it and it’s what they do all the time. There is elements of action/adventure/violence. We firstly see a bit of comedy, this is shown when Mallory is dancing and another male character goes and starts to dance with her. Just from this opening sequence we can see that the film is blending lots of different genres. This camera shot is also used when Mickey fires a gun at another victim and the camera is at the bullets point of view. Another clever camera shot that is used is when Mickey throws a knife at another character and the camera is at the knife’s point of view, showing its movement towards the victim. When the violence starts in this sequence the camera starts to shake and move quickly to give the impression that’s how the person being attacked is moving. A long shot is used when Mallory is dancing to emphasize the clothing she is wearing because it can show the audience what sort of character she is. There are many different camera shots used during this opening sequence. We get a long shot of the landscape around the diner when the camera pans out, it’s very arid and mainly dirt tracks and this is very accurate to Southern America in the time this film was set. The trucks that they drive around in are also very classic American. By this point we have heard the characters speak and we can tell that their accent is very southern American. When a character is flicking through the TV channels we see the American president, at that time, appear on the screen. This opening sequence is set in a café/diner and it’s very classic American with the retro booths and bar stools. Even before we hear the characters speak we are given different signifiers to tell us that they’re in America. We can tell straight away, as an audience, from this opening sequence that this film is set in America. Although in this film they’re the protagonists because we’re seeing the film from their perspective but to us an audience what they’re doing is wrong. By the end of this sequence we as an audience decide that these two main characters are more like antagonists. We know this when she is shouting at the men when she is attacking them. Mallory is shown as a confrontational person and is full of fury during the violence. This tells us that he is a very violent person and that later on in the film there is going to be a murder or several that he is going to be involved in as well as Mallory. When the violence starts in this sequence we see a flash back or flash forward from Mickey’s point of view and it’s him covered in blood. We see that she is wearing quite provocative clothing, a bikini top, this makes us as the audience see this character in a different light. Mallory gets up and we see what clothing she is wearing, the clothing is important as it’s a cultural signifier and gives the audience an impression of a character. Later on in the sequence we see a different side of the two main characters. We as the audience get the impression that he is very calm and respectful, we get this impression when another character refers to Mallory as a sex object and Mickey says “Her name is Mallory”. Mickey Knox is also seen to be hippie like. Mallory Knox has pigtails in her hair and this tells the audience that she is sweet and innocent also quite hippie like. When we are first introduced to these characters we get a different impression than we do later on in the sequence. The two main characters we look at during the opening sequence of Natural Born Killers are Mickey and Mallory Knox. We have looked at characterisation, setting, visual style, genre, ideology and narrative and I have analysed the sequence by looking at these specific areas. In class we have looked at the opening sequence of Natural Born Killers. “Natural Born Killers” (1994) Directed by Oliver Stone- Opening Sequence
